ROOTS ON THE RAILS 2021:
A World of Adventure!
August 22, 2020. Thank you all for your kind patience as we have been re-configuring our postponed 2020 trips and scheduling new ones. It's been a whole lot of cat herding to be sure, but we're pleased to announce the framework of our 2021 season.
While we are working on finalizing agreements with a few more artists, we invite you to peruse these offerings and begin dreaming of getting back out into the world again!
Within the next week we anticipate having those remaining details settled, the website updated, and the online store open for business!
March 21 – 28, 2021: ADVENTURES IN HAVANA!
- 7 days of cultural immersion in this fascinating and vibrant city
- Live right in the middle of old Havana
- Private tours and audiences with some of Cuba’s most interesting and prominent artists, musicians, and dancers
- SMALL GROUP – Only 10 people per tour
April 20 – 27, 2021: ADVENTURES IN HAVANA 2!
- 7 days of cultural immersion in this fascinating and vibrant city
- Live right in the middle of old Havana
- Private tours and audiences with some of Cuba’s most interesting and prominent artists, musicians, and dancers
- SMALL GROUP – Only 10 people per tour
May 17 – 21, 2021: GATHERING OF THE TRIBE AT LA POSADA
with Jon Dee Graham, Mary Gauthier, Jaimee Harris and other artists TBA
- 4 days and nights of reconnecting with the tribe
- All ROTR Alumni artists
- Take over whole hotel, have safely distanced outdoor concerts and workshops
- Day trips to Grand Canyon, Meteor Crater, Canyon de Chelly (if re-opened)
- Arrive and depart by rail from/to Chicago, Kansas City, Albuquerque or Los Angeles
June 12 – 19, 2021: ROOTS ON THE ROCKS, MONHEGAN ISLAND, MAINE
with Ellis Paul, Seth Glier and Vance Gilbert
- Explore the unspoiled coastline of Maine!
- Lighthouses, lobsters and 4 days on the blissfully charming Monhegan Island
- Portland, Boothbay Harbor and Pemaquid Point too!
- SMALL GROUP - Less than 40 total capacity!

July 3 – 10, 2021: SCOUTING TRIP THROUGH WALES WITH JON LANGFORD
London – Newport – Tenby – Criccieth – Llandudno – Glasgow
- Starts in London, ends in Glasgow
- Gig at Langford’s venue in his hometown of Newport
- Welsh Valleys and coal mining history
- Pembrokeshire Coast
- At least three narrow gauge trains through Snowdonia and other scenic routes
- Castles, castles, castles!
- SMALL GROUP - Maximum 12 people on tour
July 11 – 18, 2021: SCOUTING TRIP TO SCOTLAND!
Edinburgh – Perth – Inverness – Portree – Mallaig – Glasgow
- Starts in Edinburgh, ends in Glasgow (easy transfer back to Edinburgh for flights home)
- Inverness, Isle of Skye, Whiskey distilleries, MORE CASTLES!
- Steam train over the Harry Potter Bridge (Glennfinnian Aqueduct)
- Scottish Highlands!
- SMALL GROUP - Maximum 12 people on tour
2021 ROOTS ON THE NARROW GAUGE UPDATE:
- Tom Russell’s re-booked touring schedule for 2021 precludes him from being on the Narrow Gauge trip in 2021 (don’t worry, we still have a Tom Russell option for you coming up)- We understand that some who signed up for the Narrow Gauge trip might want to follow Tom on his new trip instead. Not a problem: we are happy to transfer your reservation at no additional cost to you.
- We also understand that some people (particularly who have already paid for their Narrow Gauge trip) might want to do BOTH trips now. Great! We will have a special 2-trip discount for anyone who wishes to do so, and don’t forget we can set up a 12 month interest-free payment schedule for you!
For those who have concerns about traveling on buses on either trip:
- We have chartered 2 buses for each trip and will not be operating either one beyond two-thirds capacity, so we are planning for enough room for safe distancing.
- We are also offering special pricing for anyone who wants to drive their own vehicle along the route, and will provide detailed itineraries, access to Elsabe’s nature presentations each day, and fun activities along the way to ensure a good time. Pronghorn Bingo anyone?

A COWBOY ADVENTURE THROUGH THE ROCKIES with Andy Hedges, Dave Stamey, Brigid and Johnny Reedy and an exciting TBA
- DENVER – CANON CITY – ALAMOSA – CHAMA – SANTA FE
- A week exploring the Rockies and Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Colorado and Northern New Mexico
- Three great vintage train rides – the Georgetown Loop, The Royal Gorge and the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad
- Three nights in Santa Fe with our own private theater
- Exciting day trips to Chimayo, Ghost Ranch and Taos Pueblo
OCTOBER 29 – NOVEMBER 5, 2021: TOM RUSSELL’S RETURN TO TEXAS
with Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Butch Hancock, Bill Kirchen and additional Texas artists TBA
- EL PASO – ALPINE – BIG BEND – TERLINGUA – FREDERICKSBURG – SAN ANTONIO – AUSTIN
- See the landscape from which so much of our favorite music was born – with the artists who birthed it.
- Tom emerges from his Swiss quarantine to revisit his favorite Texas haunts
- Starts in El Paso, train to Alpine, excursion down to Terlingua and a concert in a ghost town honky tonk. On to the German settlement of Fredericksburg, then San Antonio, then a ride on the Hill Country Flyer train and 2 nights in legendary Austin
